Acces at the
refuge Bonatti in SUMMER
The best way to reach Bonatti Hut (2025 m) is via trail 28A. This leaves after the small wooden bridge at La Remisa, just above Lavachey (park only in permitted areas) and from here follow the signposts up through the woods to the hut.
It is an easy, panoramic walk affording a wonderful view of the valley below. On coming out of the woods, you can spot the hut to the right of the alpine meadows. The path continues from here without any particularly steep stretches, leading past several old farmsteads and a mountain stream only a few minutes before the hut.

An alternative route departs from the main road, just before the wooden bridge (signposted trail 28) and leads off to the left along a wide, undemanding forestry track through a larch wood. After a few minutes’ walk and the first bends, the gradient increases. Then, after about half an hour you come to the junction leading to the hut, at this point leave the dirt track that continues southwards (towards Sécheron) and take the path climbing to the foot of the last larch trees.
During the uphill walk, windows open up through the branches to reveal a lovely view of the Mont Blanc massif (4807 m), but this is revealed in all its splendour as soon as you come out of the forest, with unmistakable Aiguille Noire (3773 m) to the left.
WALTER
BONATTI
THE EXPLORER
IN LOVE WITH THE ALPS
In August 1948, Walter Bonatti first donned climbing shoes and scaled the Campaniletto tower in Grignetta, Lombardy: this marked the opening of an amazing story.
Over the following years Bonatti became the mountaineer who hunted down and climbed “impossible” routes on the Mont Blanc massif. At the age of 35 he’d become the solitary and inimitable champion who, to everyone’s astonishment, shed the guise of great mountaineer and, in the wake of legendary adventure journalists of the past, became an outstanding writer, reporting from remote lands.
THE HUT
A MOUNTAIN HOUSE
OVERLOOKING MONT BLANC
Rifugio Bonatti can be reached in a little over an hour from Val Ferret by traversing larch woods and alpine meadows. It’s set at the foot of the Grandes Jorasses, directly opposite magnificent Fréboudze glacier.
“The mountains have taught me not to cheat, to be honest with myself and what I was doing.” Walter Bonatti”
